Student arrested in connection with burglary

Published Wednesday, August 13, 2008

A 17-year-old Benjamin Russell High School student has been arrested and charged with the burglary at Horseshoe Bend School.

“We made an arrest on one person,” said John McKelvey, police chief of New Site.

McKelvey said the juvenile was arrested Thursday afternoon at BRHS and is a current student at the school. McKelvey said because the person arrested is a juvenile, the name could not be released.

“The case is still under investigation but we have made one arrest,” McKelvey said. “We just followed up on leads and tips from different people.”

McKelvey said the arrest doesn’t mean the investigation is over, because he still expects more arrests.

“I know for sure there are others involved,” he said.

McKelvey said the investigation is a joint effort with the Sheriff’s Department.

The juvenile was taken to the Department of Youth Services in Lee County and will face charges for burglary in the third degree, theft in the second degree and criminal mischief in the first degree.

HBS was broken into on Thursday, Aug. 31. When staff members arrived to the school, they discovered the safe had been stolen. Thieves broke into the school through an outside glass door, tore down a wall in the office and stole the safe.

The only items in the safe were some empty money boxes the school uses to collect money at ball games and a jar used to collect tickets.
