Kiwanis Golf Tournament set for July 14 at Stillwaters
Published Friday, July 11, 2008
Because I’ve had many phone calls about the Dadeville Record Office being closed these days, I have good news! The publisher of TPI, Tim Reeves, has hired a new sales executive and she is in the process of being trained. She will be in the Record office very soon, maybe next week. Hooray. The sales person who has been there awhile (Shawna Sanford) is off on maternity leave and should be giving birth to her son within a few days. Another hooray! In the meantime, if you don’t have a subscription to the Dadeville Record (why don’t you?) just spend a quarter at a machine which are all over town. For questions or more information, please call the TPI office in Alexander City at 234-4281. Continue to have patience with us.

Last Monday morning (at daylight), Ms. Gaye Haggerty and family threw a surprise breakfast for hubby Bobby Haggerty, at his place of business in Dadeville, celebrating 50 years at the job! Before the company was named “Spencer Lumber”, it was “Dadeville Lumber Co.” and now is the “Russell Do-it Center”. Through all those changes, Bobby Haggerty has been on site doing his great job, since the age of nineteen years. I was pleased to learn that he has no intention of retiring and will still be there to take care of us. Gaye said at least sixty folks stopped by for breakfast and to greet the guest of honor. Keep up the good work, Bobby. We’re counting on you.

Also, if you can give a freezer of homemade ice-cream for Monday, July 14th, please let one of the ladies know ASAP! Thanks.
The First United Methodist Church has scheduled their Vacation Bible School for July 21-25, from 9:00 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. If you can volunteer to help, please contact Cecilia Blue at 825-7295. Vacation Bible School is for kids entering first grade through sixth grade.
Sunday morning service at the Methodist Church was most enjoyable. The congregation is warming up to the personality of our new preacher, Baxter Chism. He has the sense of humor usually found in the deep South which we all enjoy, and delivers some sure-fire sermons. The music program provided was very special. Organist Alice Wenstrom brought her daughter, son-in-law and grandson to perform for us. First, daughter Nancy sang a lovely song, “Love Note to Jesus” while also playing the piano. Next Nancy and her son Anthony sang a duet named “Gentle Voice” as her husband Brad accompanied them on trumpet. This California family named Cantania is truly blessed with musical talent and we were blessed to hear them. Many thanks, Alice, for sharing your family with your church.
Ms. Mondine Foshee (my Methodist pew-mate) sent me information about their family reunion, which I shall share with you. It was held in Tallassee on June 28 at the home of her daughter, Camille Foshee Mason, and son-in-law Phill Mason. The reunion was in honor of Camille’s Mother, Mondine, as well as Maxine Penton of Aldersgate Retirement Home in Meridian, and Truman Thornton of Roxanna, Lee County. Attending were 52 children, spouses, grandchildren and great-grandchildren! This lively group enjoyed fellowship, swimming in the pool, and eating Cotton’s barbeque and other great food. Of course, cake and ice-cream were served at the end of the feast. The good news is that everyone returned safely to their homes. As Ms. Mondine said “Isn’t God Good?” My answer is yes, indeed.
Congratulations to our new Principal at Councill Middle School, Mr. Chris Hand! His co-workers and friends know how very skilled he is, and what a fine job he has done at DHS as Vice-Principal. Having worked with Mr. Chris over the years on DHS Key Club events, I guarantee his dedication and intelligence will impress everyone in this new job. I’m proud of you Mr. Chris! You have some mighty big shoes to fill, those of Dr. Chuck Ledbetter, but I KNOW you’re up for the job.
As you know, Councill Middle School’s After School Program called “Camp Invention” is being held this week, July 7 – 11. Gayle Sewell and I delivered sacks full of recyclables to CMS Monday morning: bubble wrap (thanks Susie), plastic bottles and containers (thanks Diane) and miscellaneous empty boxes. I appreciate the help of friends when our schools need it! I’m sure Camp Invention will be a success.

Important date for your calendars: Sunday, July 20th, at 2:30 p.m. the Tallapoosee Historical Society will hold a very special meeting at Mr. Tom Radney’s Farm in Daviston, Alabama, named “The Quarters”. Mr. Radney has not only agreed to host the meeting at his farm, but also will give the program, namely, a history of his family. The Radneys have been Tallapoosa County leaders for many generations, and it should be most interesting. Next week I will give you directions to the Radney Farm.

Were you as surprised as I to hear that Mr. Bill Gates, CEO of Microsoft will be leaving Microsoft to work on the charitable foundation he and his wife set up a few years ago? There are many news articles about his retirement decision, yet he plans to become Microsoft’s non-executive chairman, and will remove himself from the company’s day-to-day business. Microsoft investors are concerned that Gates is leaving at a time when the company is in a not-so-perfect condition, since it’s latest version of the operating system named “Vista” is a huge disappointment for consumers. (Most users prefer XP, the previous operating system). In its 33 hectic years, the company has grown to almost 90,000 employees with revenues this year reaching over $60 billion, and net income at $18 billion. They now sell 75 different products, many of which have lots of versions. As you know, Google is Microsoft’s biggest rival. Although Microsoft tried to buy Yahoo, that offer was refused. Software companies have invested huge amounts of money into online search. Microsoft’s search engine market share is only 8.5% in the U.S., while Google’s share is more than 60%. Bill Gates is a powerful and impressive man and his company will indeed continue to flourish. I wish the Gates success in their benevolent endeavors.
I remember life being more fun BEFORE computers, don’t you? (To a young person that would be considered idiotic or at least blasphemy.) Yet Bob and Betty Hayes are RETIRED IBM’ers, who live in a home with several computers, keyboards, scanners, shredders, faxes, printers, speakers, copiers and nine telephones. What’s wrong with this picture?
Continue to pray for our military personnel and their families. Pray that our next President will focus on the war and make whatever decisions are right for our soldiers. Pray that the worldwide economy will improve so that we can afford to keep our homes, feed and clothe our families and even buy gasoline!
Thought for Today: If at first you don’t succeed, destroy all evidence that you tried!
See y’all next week!
