Students preparing to return to school Aug. 5

Published Wednesday, July 23, 2008

Our students will go back to school on Tuesday, August 5. Some of them may even be looking forward to it, do you think? They’ll get to meet new teachers and even new principals and settle into their new schedules. Considering that 3-month-long-summers were established so that the farmers had enough children around to help bring in the crops, we no longer need such long vacations away from school. Now I’ll have parents calling me about this, since school days give most of them a few hours break.

Sardis Methodist Church on highway 50 near Walnut Hill is searching for a pianist. Choir rehearsal is Wednesday nights from 6 until 7:30, and Sunday service is from 11 until noon. If you are interested in this job, please contact Sandra Hall (choir director) at 334-436-0391. Thanks, Glenda Lowe, for this.

As I told you earlier, TPI has hired a sales person named Brittany Smith, who is currently working part-time in Alex City and part-time at our Dadeville Record Office. If you pass by and see her car, stop in and make her feel welcome. The Record phone number is 825-2245, or call Alex City at 234-4281.

Methodist Church service was good last Sunday morning. Rev. Baxter Chism seems to be quite at home with us Dadevillians already. He is a knowledgeable and good-hearted young minister who will add a lot to this church. Getting some young blood into a group always adds energy and enthusiasm. We enjoyed a beautiful trio sung by Lynn and Matt Bianchi and Jean Davis, accompanied by Alice Wenstrom on the organ.

Immediately after church I got in my recliner and put ice packs on my swollen right knee, which will have orthoscopic surgery tomorrow. I’ve already told Rev. Kitty Rankin if I’m “laid up” for Presbyterian Church on July 27, I’ll just postpone them a week. Fair is fair.

I’m sure my readers are wondering what happened to my knee? Well, I should have known better than to skydive at my age. I never should’ve gone whitewater rafting either. Skiing in Colorado last winter made it even worse.

Okay, okay, so I’m just dreaming of younger days. Would you believe the kids dog from next door, jumped off the porch glider just as I began to sit in my chair and the glider hit the front of my knee at about 30 mph? So that’s the truth.

One of our Methodist local ladies, Mary Rose Prather, has moved to Columbus, Georgia and would love to get a card, note or letter from her Dadeville friends. The address is 6248 Charing Drive, Columbus, GA 31909.

The Tallapoosee Historical Society held a great meeting on Sunday afternoon , July 20th, at Mr. Tom Radney’s Farm near Daviston, Alabama, named “The Quarters”. About 45 folks enjoyed themselves. The farm is in the middle of the Creek Indian lands and Mr. Radney gave a history of his family and the Creek Indians who once lived on the land. Those that attended gave me some info to share with you.

Mr. Radney talked about the Battle of Horseshoe Bend, as General Andrew Jackson and his Tennessee troops fought the Creeks and won the battle. He said General Jackson hated Indians, and that he was pleased when “we” took their land. Jackson also cried over the death of Major Montgomery, killed in 1814. Mr. Radney shared the things he is most ashamed of, namely, the fact that witches were killed in Salem, Mass; the way Orientals living in the U.S. were imprisoned during WWII; and the Trail of Tears. After his presentation, the group enjoyed refreshments and looking around the farm outside the beautiful house. I hope I get to see this showplace someday. The Tallapoosa Historical Society members thank Mr. Radney and his family for providing this interesting and educational afternoon.

Incidentally, our lovely historical museum on Broadnax Street is open to the public on Thursdays and Fridays from 9 until noon, and on the first Saturday morning of each month. Please stop by and take a tour. Also pick up one of our lovely new brochures! They are beautiful and will make you proud to be a Tallapoosa County resident. Facts and pictures include coverage of the Battle of Horseshoe Bend, gold mining, Grafenberg Institute, Russell Manufacturing, Martin Dam, and a listing of the museum artifacts. On the back is an application for membership in the society, at only $15 per member or $20 per household. These are ANNUAL fees, so jump on board and check out our history.

Put on your calendars: Friday, August 1, at 10:00 a.m., our newest business in town will hold an open house. Guy and Marsha Hartness will be proud to welcome you to the “Old Bank Antiques” grand opening. It is right next door to the Tallapoosee Historical Museum. Please plan to stop by and see this lovely antique store which Guy has worked so hard on, restoring and refurbishing. This was the Bank of Dadeville for years and years and is now a lovely location we’re all proud of.

Our Kiwanis Club speaker at noon today is Ms. Allison Wetherbee, Director of Public Relations at Camp ASCCA. Program host is Peggy Bullard. If you’d care to join us for this presentation and (free) lunch, please call me ASAP at 750-0883 or 825-5555.

If you’re as sick and tired of receiving political emails as I am, it’s no wonder. Seems like I have to check out every one of them on either snopes or truthorfiction, and most are only partially based on fact. Some of us are “yellow dog” democrats and always vote for that candidate; some of us are conservative republicans who are strong McCain supporters, and some of us are sitting on the fence right now, wishing we had a completely unknown person to appear and get the job. Goodness knows the good old U.S.A. is at an all-time low period in morale, with a failing economy and too many illegal immigrants in our midst. What in the world would possess a U.S. city to become a “Sanctuary City” to illegals and criminals? Washington, Jefferson, FDR, Harry Truman, Ronald Reagan and Jack Kennedy are frowning down on us from Heaven, probably thinking “what a mess!”

By August 28th in Denver, and September 1st in St. Paul, maybe the country will take a turn for the better.

Happier News: on August 23, the Dadeville Chamber is hosting their annual dinner/dance at Camp Civitan that evening, with a luau theme and casual dress. $75 per couple, and you are urged to help by joining one of the committees. They need your help! Call Carla at the Chamber (825-4019) for more information.

Please pray for the family of Agnes Willis whose funeral was this morning at the Presbyterian Church. She was a precious Christian woman whose age was almost ninety.

Thought for Today: A real family man is one who can look at his new child as an addition, rather than a deduction.

See y’all next week!
