A Girl Scout troop out of Dadeville is doing its part to share the gift of reading with others in the area.

The six members of Girl Scout Troop 6247 started working toward their community service badge by donating some of their used books to the Dadeville Public Library to help promote reading throughout the community.

Troop leader Bobbie Massengil said the girls came up with the idea for the donation all by themselves.

“We gave them an option and let them decide what to do to get their community service badge,” Massengil said. “This is how they wanted to help their community.”

The six girls together donated over 100 books to the library. Many of the books were designed for younger readers.

“Its important to promote reading,” Massengil said. “These are all books the girls have enjoyed and they wanted to donate them in order to allow others to enjoy them.”

Amy Huff, library director, said she appreciated the donation because it meant so much to the community as well.

“Donations are always good because you’re helping us and the community too,” Huff said. “When you donate to the library it helps the community because the community can use the donations.”

Huff said this is the first time she can remember a girl scout troop donating to the library.
