Tallapoosa County has officially raised the amount it will pay for indigent burials in the county.
In a motion made by commissioner Johnny Allen and unanimously approved, Monday morning at their meeting, the county raised the amount it pays for indigent burials from $75 to $500; a move commissioners hope will be closer to burial actual prices.
Commissioner T.C. Coley said the move would offer assistance to the families in need and the funeral homes as well.
“The $75 payment was set 35 to 40 years ago,” Coley said. “You can’t find anything now that costs the same as it did that long ago. I fully support this move.”
The commission also decided to go into executive session to discuss pending litigation and to discuss an individual’s good name and character.
In other news, the commission is still waiting on word to donate a lot on Semmes Street to Habitat for Humanity.
The commission approved a resolution to initiate a federal aid resurfacing project on Dudleyville Road on the suggestion of county engineer David Moore.
“I recommend we use 2010 federal aid grant to resurface Dudleyville Road,” Moore said.
Blake Beck, county administrator designated county depositories at Aliant Bank and RBC Bank in Dadeville.
The Tallapoosa County Courthouse will be closed Tuesday in observance of Veterans’ Day.
