Middle schoolers visit Six Flags

Although the “Bailout” Bill did NOT pass the House, and the stock market continues to plummet to the lowest rate EVER, perhaps by the time you read this column, the U.S. financial situation is not damaged beyond repair. In the meantime, Dadeville and surrounding towns continue to be active, continue to count our blessings and our country’s leaders remain in our prayers. (Putting ? tank of gas in my Explorer today cost over $44.00. How about your gasoline costs?) We can still take pride in our beautiful Alabama, our gorgeous Lake Martin, and our winning Dadeville Tigers. See? Life still has lots of good in it.
On to happier news, the CMS students (grades 5, 6 & 7) whose SAT scores this year were an improvement over last year had a wonderful field trip to SIX FLAGS last Saturday! There were 114 students and 20 chaperones in the group. All expenses paid by our Board of Education. Now there’s a good incentive to study harder, isn’t it?
The Ethan Club golf tournament was a great success last Sunday, with 18 teams playing and 42 hole sponsors. The weather couldn’t have been more perfect for outdoor fun. They should net approximately $5300, which is great. The money is still coming in and it will be put to good use. As you know, in a fundraiser of this sort, it takes a week or two to collect everything. My congratulations to the Ethan Club for completing another successful fundraiser.
I enjoyed my Sunday morning service at the Presbyterian Church, listening to Rev. Kitty preach another good sermon titled “To Be Like Christ”. Good message. The choir was short a few folks, but Dale and Dawn continued to make beautiful music.
By the way, several folks at church said they saw the commercial “we” made advertising Medical Park Family Care. The “we” was Bill Brown, Jerry Bynum and myself. Guess what? None of us had seen it, because we don’t have cable! Susan Foy, from Russell Medical Center, was nice enough to send the three of us copies via email. Thanks, Susan. One gentleman said it ran several times while he was watching the football game. So if you are sick of seeing this commercial, sorry. We had fun making it.
The Homecoming Service at the First Presbyterian Church in Dadeville will be on Sunday, October 12th. We hope you will come join us, as we’d love to have a really good turnout for this big occasion. For questions, call the church at 825-4081.
DHS Fundraisers: We’re STILL selling metal car tags to attach to the front of your car for $10, and flags for $20 to place in your window. Both tags and flags say “DHS – Support Your Team!” Call Peggy Bullard at 825-9415 or stop by Lil Lambs & Ivy to buy some. These would make excellent gifts also.
DHS Senior Beta Club completed a successful blood drive, and is now raising money to help victims of domestic violence. A very worthy cause.
The Dadeville Elementary PTO group is holding a HUGE yard sale this Saturday, October 4th, outside the DES gymnasium. (In case of rain, it will be inside the gym!) Beginning at 7:00 a.m. until they’re sold out. Susan Walker called to say they will have a lot of kids clothes and baby stuff in the sale, and all will be reasonably priced. Funds will be used for the PTO projects, of which there are many. Please participate in this yard sale. For questions, call Susan at 496-4503. Thanks.
I’m really LOVING my water aerobic (cardio) classes at the Wellness Center, Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at 1:00 p.m. Our therapist-instructor Wendy keeps us moving and we can have fun besides. There are also low-impact aerobic classes for arthritic persons on Tuesday & Thursday at 11:00 a.m., floor aerobics on Monday & Thursday at 5:30 p.m. and Yoga classes on Tuesday and Thursday at 8:00 a.m. When your class is over, there’s that smoothie bar waiting for you. I love them all, fresh fruit and juices stirred up in the blender with ice, and they really hit the spot! I am very impressed with the professional staff at the Wellness Center. Each person on the payroll is doing their job and doing it well, happy to be there. Thank God for the Wellness Center. We needed it. Telephone is 825-2303.
The next program in the Brown Bag Series at B.B. Comer Memorial Library will be on Wednesday, October 8, starting with light lunch (or bring your own) at 11:00 a.m. and lecture at noon. The speaker will be Mr. Warren Trest, and the subject of his presentation is “Nobody but the people: The Life and Times of Alabama’s Youngest Governor (Gov. John Patterson). Patterson was a crime-fighting attorney general propelled into the governor’s office following the brutal murder of his father. He will appear with Mr. Trest, an award-winning historian. Patterson considers this “first authorized biography” of himself and his family to be accurate and complete. It promises to be a wonderful presentation, and there is no charge. For more information, call 256-249-0961.
KEEP the evening of October 7th (Tuesday) on your calendars right now. We will have our Chamber’s Annual Business Banquet that night at Camp Civitan. Cost is $35 per person and the meal and entertainment is ALWAYS well worth the price. Tickets are being sold all over town. Chamber telephone is 825-4019, or call Peggy Bullard at 825-9415. I’m looking forward to this banquet and will be looking for you.
The Dadeville Kiwanis Club held their annual installation program last Thursday. Kiwanis Lt. Gov. Bob Renie from Opelika did a fine job installing each and every person on the new board of directors. President Wayne Washburn is now a past-president, and handed over the gavel to President Lavaughn Johnson for the coming year. President-Elect is now Stanley Gillies, VP is Steve Kerr, I continue to be their secretary-treasurer, with Janis Yarbrough assisting me. Our three new Directors are Agnes Wages, Phil Evers and Lee Rearden. They will join Directors Tony Johnson, John Neubauer and Chuck Ogburn on the 2008-2009 Board. Welcome to you all. We have good leaders on board ready, willing and able to do the job of keeping children as Priority #1 while assisting the schools and the community.
The Jewelry Sale by the Lake Martin Community Hospital Auxiliary was yesterday and I understand they had a good business. Congratulations.
If you happen to own a copy of the “Tallapoosa County Heritage” book published by the Heritage Publishing Company, you might want to contact them for other books at telephone 205-280-4100. I am told that they have excess copies of a few different books and have priced them fairly. Some of you interested in genealogy should give them a call. Thanks.
Charles Farrow called to say he hoped for good attendance this Sunday
morning (starting at 11:00 a.m.) for the 52nd Reunion of the old Centerport
Methodist Church at Susanna, Alabama. Take highway #50 West, turn left at
Centerport Road. For questions, call 234-1620, Charles' cell phone. Some
of the old families from the good ole days should enjoy attending this
reunion.
That’s all the news I collected this week. Please keep sending me emails to bettyhayes@hughes.net, or call me on my cell at 750-0883 to share your family’s stories. Remember this column is for YOU.
Thought for Today: Genuine happiness occurs when a wife sees a double chin on her husband’s old girlfriend.
See y’all next week!
