It was the stuff long methodical game winning drives are made of, a shade over five minutes on the clock in the fourth quarter and the Tigers had the ball at their own 35 yard line down 22-21 to the Bulldogs of Lafayette High School but Dadeville High School quarterback eric vickers and the Tigers offense scored quickly.
The Tigers scored on only two plays ending with a 60-yard run by Vickers. The tigers took the lead 27-22 after a missed extra point attempt. After a four down stop by the Tigers defense, Vickers iced the game with a 26-yard run to put DHS up 35-22 with 2:11 left in the game.
DHS head coach Richard White said he was happy his team had what it took to come back in the fourth quarter in Lafayette.
“I’m glad we were able to hold our own,” said White. “This is a tough place to win a game.”
The Tigers offense, after scoring on its first drive of the ballgame on three plays ending with a one-yard run by Quin Jones, could not get anything else going. DHS scored on an 82-yard kickoff return and an 86-yard interception return both by Tre McKinney for touchdowns to score 21 points in the first half.
Vickers and the offense only completed 2 of 8 passes in the first half.
Lafayette also scored on its first drive of the game on a four-yard pass completion from Javontae Holloway to Antoine Heard on a 20-play drive that ate up 8:29. The score was 21-8 at the half.
White said the Bulldogs’ ball control in the first half messed with his team’s offensive rhythm.
“We only had the ball one or two series in the first half,” White said. “We’re a team that has to get a rhythm and we couldn’t do that in the first half.”
The Bulldogs scored on their opening possession of the second half on an 18-yard pass from Holloway to Heard but missed a two-point conversion to make it 21-14 with 8:35 left in the third quarter.
After a DHS drive stalled, the Bulldogs scored on a 12-yard pass from Holloway to Justin Schuelke on the first play of the fourth quarter. The successful two-point attempt but the Tigers down 22-21 but the aforementioned touchdowns by Vickers and a total of 117 yards on 12 rushes made the final score 35-22.
The Tigers remain unbeaten in class 3A region 3 action at 5-0 and undefeated on the season at 7-0.
