Dadeville Elementary celebrating Grandparents Day Sept. 5

Published Wednesday, September 3, 2008

We’ve been very lucky with our weather lately. Neither of the hurricanes has bothered us, yet we had some pretty good rainy weather last week. Lake Martin needs more water from Heaven, but let’s hope the strong winds stay away. Let’s also hope that none of us loses our electrical power again. That’s such an inconvenience and a pain!

Although many local Presbyterians were absent from church Sunday morning (illness, travel, etc.), those of us who attended were pleased to do so. Rev. Kitty’s sermon was about “The Burning Bush” which is always an exciting story. The choir was also excellent under the leadership of Dale and Dawn. It’s great when a married couple can work together with their God-given talents. I can still see my Mother playing the organ while Daddy sang in the choir as I was growing up.

Last week’s speaker at Kiwanis, invited by program host Phil Evers was Dr. Mark Wilson, Assistant Director of Auburn University’s Center for Arts and Humanities. He was a good speaker and we learned a lot about AU’s largest college (our of 12), the College of Liberal Arts. He also said that he and his staff are active partners with one of the Kiwanis projects, “Reading is Fundamental” in Opelika. He said less and less books are being read today, thanks to television, video games, cell phones, ipods, etc. etc. and that if we didn’t stress the importance of reading to our youngsters, our world will suffer greatly. This is true, and I’m sure my readers are avid book-types, right? Otherwise, why would you read this?

Today’s Kiwanis program host, Jerry Bynum, has invited another special speaker: Mr. Charles Borden, President of Lake Martin Resource Association. If you wish to join us for lunch and to hear what Mr. Borden has to say, call me ASAP at 750-0883 or 825-5555. Thanks.

The Ethan Club will hold it’s tenth annual Charity Golf Tournament on Sunday, September 28th at Stillwaters. The tournament format is a 1:00 p.m. shotgun start, best ball scramble. Bence Hartley will sponsor a hole-in-one car! The cost is $75 per player, or $300 per team. I hope many of you will participate in this fundraiser. The Ethan Clubbers do a lot of good things around town, and that takes money. For more information, call Cheryl Bynum at 825-7408.

More Repeat News: On Saturday, September 13, from 8:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. A day of teaching, music, worship and fellowship will be held at the First United Methodist Church (the Arbor) in Alex City. Tickets are required, but admission is free. This event is called “Extraordinary Women 2008” and sounds wonderful. The flyer lists the names of the teachers: Karen Kingsbury, Thelma Wells, Carol Kent and Angela Thomas, as well as musicians Charles Billingsley and Richie McDonald. For more information, call the church at 234-6322.

Upcoming events at BRHS in Alex City are performances scheduled by the Alex City Arts. First show is set for September 18 at 7:30 p.m. called “Three on a String” a trio of musicians who know how to entertain and want to share their good time show. For more information, call Beverly Thomas at 234-9922.

Upcoming events in Sylacauga: The Brown Bag Series at B.B. Comer Memorial Library will resume with eight programs beginning each Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. for light refreshments (or bring your own) and programs follow at noon. Working people are encouraged to come by on their lunch breaks to enjoy the lectures. All programs are FREE and open to the public. Put the first one on your calendars: September 10, a lecture of “Long Live the King: The rags to riches story of Elvis Presley” presented by Chris Phillips, The Director of Worship and Arts, Methodist Church in Sylacauga. Should be an interesting presentation, especially for fans of the King. I will describe each of the series just before it occurs. For more information, call the library at 256-249-0961.

Important help needed: The Tallapoosee Historical Society desperately needs two filing cabinets! They don’t have to be beautiful, just functional. President Charles Farrow asks if anyone has two cabinets they’re not using, could the historical society have them? We have lots of important historical information to store and keep safe. If your answer is YES, please call Bill Ponder at 825-4492. Thanks.

Dadeville Elementary News: The students (with parental help) are selling all sorts of Christmas goodies now, and also jewelry and other lovely things from the A+ Sales Catalog. I bought several items today and hope you will support this cause if you’re approached by either a DES student or parent. All funds from fundraisers are put to good use, believe me!

Keep our military personnel and their families in your prayers. Keep our politicians in your prayers, and don’t lose your sense of humor between now and November 4th.

Thought for Today from Senator Bill Bradley: “Becoming number 1 is easier than remaining number 1!!

See y’all next week!
