Peckerwood Rescue Squad looks to great year after fundraiser
Published Wednesday, September 3, 2008
Greetings from the Berry Patch. It’s good to be back home. I arrived back Thursday the 28th around 3:30 p.m. and took a couple of hours to unpack and freshen up and headed to the squad to help with preparations for the Boston butt and chicken-que sale. The members were all busy as bees when I got there. Everyone at Peckerwood Rescue Squad would like to thank the Jackson’s Gap, Dadeville, Alexander City, Kellyton, New Site, Goodwater and all the Lake Martin area for their tremendous support. We even had a lady from Texas come with her parents from Goodwater. She said she had heard so much about the barbecue that she wanted to try it and after eating she told us how good it was. We had so many compliments on the food as well as compliments on how much the squad has progressed over the last year. That means a lot to our members as we have been working really hard. Our members work so good together and we want them to know how much we appreciate them. Ladies you did a fantastic job and so did the guys. We especially want to thank our main cooks, Terry Huff, Mannon Simmss, John Thornton, Bubba Wise, Billy Moore and Gary Simms. We had a lot of compliments on how good the chicken was this years as well as the other barbecue. We also want to thank the musicians, singers and dancers. On Friday night we had Jimmy Cleveland and his band. Then on Saturday we had Teddy and Hunter Kaye, the Encouragers, The Eye Witnesses, Perfect Peace, the Kowaliga Cloggers and our Elvis impersonator, Rex Cosby and his wife, Melanie. You all did a great job. There are so many others like our county commissioners, Frank Tapley and Mr. Leon Archer, who furnished a portable toilet. Our president, Terry Newman, wants each squad member to know how much he appreciates our support and we couldn’t have the success we have had without you. We look forward to a bigger and better year ahead. “Go Peckerwood!”
I hope you all are paying close attention to the weather. It looks like we have two or three hurricanes headed our way, so stay informed and be prepared in case of severe weather. They’re expecting another one to hit Florida Friday or Saturday. It may be a one, two or three punch, so we need to take precautions. The rain you received while I was gone really helped the lake level. My pontoon boat was sitting low when I left and I was worried about it, but when I came back it was back up level with the dock.
Remember to pray for our service men and women and their families as well as for our veterans everywhere.
I would also like to personally thank all the people who’ve come up to me to say they look forward to reading my column, I’ve had so many favorable comments and I am very appreciative of each of you and I look forward to meeting more of you as time goes on. May God bless and keep you and I hope you’ll join me again next week, right here in the Berry Patch.
