The Tallapoosa County Sheriff’s Department is offering a second Firearms Safety Course this year after the first was a success.
“We had several requests for us to provide that training course,” said Sheriff Jimmy Abbett. “We’re going to do it again for the citizens who want to do it.”
The course is split into two parts — a classroom session and a hands-on session.
The first part will be held at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 11 in the courtroom of the Courthouse Annex in Alexander City.
The classroom portion will teach participants how to safely operate a gun.
Then the participants will be able to practice what they learned in the hands-on portion.
The second part will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 13 at the Alexander City Police Firing Range.
Participants will learn gun handling techniques and how to shoot.
The course will be taught by Lt. Bill Hough of the Sheriff’s Department.
Abbett said there were 13 participants during the first course, and 10 to 15 will be accepted for the second course.
“Anywhere in that number,” he said. “It gives good hands-on training.”
