DPD to step up patrols for holiday

Published Wednesday, July 1, 2009

The Dadeville Police Department and the Alabama State Troopers are both gearing up for the heavy traffic expected during the Fourth of July holiday weekend through the “Take Back our Highways” initiative.

The DPD will have extra patrols present on city streets and highways as part of the program, according to Lt. David Barbour.

“We primarily increase patrols for Memorial Day, the Fourth of July and other holidays throughout the year,” Barbour said.

Barbour added that part of the increased patrols would include various safety checkpoints throughout town, which can be quick and easy if a driver is prepared for them.

“They need to make sure they are buckled up, have their registration, driver’s license and proof of insurance,” Barbour said. “They need to have the proper information in their car or on their person. Do not drink and drive.”

The safety checkpoints, which are scheduled to start Friday will check drivers and vehicles for seat belts, child restraints and other equipment, according to Barbour, and the number of checkpoints is unknown at this time.

Troopers will also monitor traffic over the weekend through routine patrols, line patrols, checkpoints and laser speed details throughout the 78-hour period from 6 p.m. Thursday through midnight Sunday.

Public safety director Col. J. Christopher Murphy urged motorists to be courteous and patient in the holiday traffic and to remain focused on the task of driving. Murphy reminded drivers to be aware of their surroundings and watchful for actions of other motorists.

“Buckle up and make sure everyone in the vehicle is properly restrained, drive within posted speed limits, never drive while impaired and obey all the traffic laws,” Murphy said. “These traffic safety fundamentals can make a real difference in your safety and that of your passengers”
