Pageant looks for local contestants
Published Wednesday, November 25, 2009
The 2010 Outlook Calendar Girl Pageant will be held Jan. 8-9 at the Benjamin Russell High School Auditorium.
The pageant is open to girls age 4 through 12th grade. Registration begins today and will extend through Wednesday, Dec. 30.
The Outlook Calendar Girl Pageant began in 1974 and thousands of young women from Tallapoosa, Coosa, Elmore, Clay and Talladega counties have participated over the years.
Young ladies compete in four divisions, Petite Miss for girls 4 years old through second grade; Little Miss, for third through sixth graders; Junior Miss for seventh to ninth graders; and Miss for high school sophomores, juniors and seniors.
“We’re going to have a winter wonderland theme,” said Pageant Director Emily Caldwell. “Members of Central Alabama Community College’s Phi Theta Kappa and ambassadors will help decorate.”
Over the years, The Calendar Girl Pageant has become a winter time tradition in many families.
“It’s fun for the moms and the kids,” Caldwell said. “It’s a girls day out and the contestants love it because so many of them do it year after year … I also feel like the girls learn how to be poised and have good stage presence, which helps with their self esteem and development.”
The pageant is sponsored by The Outlook and Central Alabama Community College.
“There are no losers in the Calendar Girl Pageant,” said Outlook Publisher Kenneth Boone. “Everybody will take home a sash, a trophy and a title.”
Boone said changes this year include cash prizes for all division winners, and each will be featured in a calendar published as part of The Outlook’s annual Parade edition in February.
“Our judges come from out of town and they all have some pageant experience,” said Caldwell. “Each girl is judged on her appearance and performance, and not compared to other contestants.”
Judges award points on separate score cards for sportswear, modeling, overall beauty, interview, party dress or gown. The Junior and Miss competitions also include a figure or body shape category. The points are totaled by CACC representatives and until the scores are tallied, nobody knows who the winner is.
“Our contestants should look their age,” Caldwell said. “We’re looking for the All-American Girl look.”
This year winners in the Petite Miss, Little Miss and Junior Miss competitions will receive their titles, $150 cash prize the night of the pageant, a trophy, a sash. Miss Outlook will win the same prizes and in addition will earn the Billy McGhee Memorial Scholarship, which is a full Ambassador’s scholarship to Central Alabama Community College.
Applications will be available at the front desk of The Outlook. For more information call The Outlook at (256) 234-4281 or Emily Caldwell at (256) 794-2295 or (256) 329-2295.
