Fire safety is out no. 1 concern

Published Wednesday, October 7, 2009

For most people the month of October brings thoughts of crisp mornings, the changing of the leaves, the harvest and of course football games. But to a firefighter, this month brings thoughts of Mrs. O’Leary’s cow and the Great Chicago Fire. Because of this occurrence, a week in October is set aside as Fire Prevention Week. In Dadeville and throughout the United States, fire departments are visiting schools, handing our coloring books and fire safety literature, watching videos and teaching children in-home fire safety. The children are also able to see and touch fire fighting equipment, talk to the firefighters up close and personal and tour the fire truck.

Our number one concern is the fire safety for each resident in the Dadeville area. We are working hard to achieve this goal through our fire safety programs.

October is also a time when we as firefighters remember our fallen comrades who have given their lives in the line of duty. A memorial honoring these men and women has been built at the National Fire Academy in Emmetsburg, Maryland called the “Walk of Honor.”

As a third generation firefighter, I sincerely ask for your daily prayers so that we may complete our task and everyone returns safely to the station.

Ralph W. Emerson, Jr., Captain,

Dadeville Fire Department
