USPS continues to investigate Harrelson murder
Published Wednesday, October 14, 2009
The United States Postal Inspection Service continues to investigate the murder of postal worker Tony Harrelson, who was shot and killed at the Camp Hill post office on Oct. 2.
The Postal Inspection Service has set up a command center at the Opelika post office and officers from across the Southeast have joined the team there.
“We’ve transitioned from emergency response to full investigative mode and that’s why we have a command center now that’s being manned 24/7,” said U.S. Postal Inspector Tony Robinson. “We’re here to do whatever it takes to catch this individual.”
The United States Postal Service is offering up to $100,000 in reward money for information about the murder.
“It’s a standing reward anytime an employee is killed in the line of duty,” Robinson said.
The postal service has already posted thousands of fliers to publicize the award, and they plan to mail out 50,000 more on Tuesday. Robinson said they have received numerous calls from concerned citizens and encouraged anyone who may have information to call one of the three hotlines set up by the U.S. Postal Service and Tallapoosa County Sheriff’s Department.
“I can’t stress it enough,” Robinson said. “There might be someone out there who isn’t sure if what they know might be worth something to us, but let us decide that.”
Harrelson, 46, a postal service contract worker from Dadeville, was shot and killed at the Camp Hill post office between 5:45 and 6:15 p.m. on Oct. 2. A 911 call alerted officials to the shooting. The U.S. Postal Inspection Service is investigating the crime with the Tallapoosa County Sheriff’s Department, the Alabama Bureau of Investigation and the Camp Hill Police Department.
If you have information about the crime, call any of the following hotlines: U.S. Postal Inspection Service hotline, 877-876-2455; Tallapoosa County Sheriff’s Department, 256-825-4264; or the Tallapoosa County Sheriff’s Department Secret Witness Number, 256-827-2035.
