Inspectors look to billboards

USPS to use advertising space to gather information in the murder of Tony Harrelson at the Camp Hill Post Office

Published Wednesday, October 28, 2009

The United States Postal Inspection Service will begin posting billboards in east Alabama next week to encourage people who have information about the murder of postal worker Tony Harrelson to come forward.

Harrelson, 47, a Dadeville resident, was shot and killed at the Camp Hill post office between the hours of 5:45 and 6:15 p.m. on Oct. 2. The USPS has distributed tens of thousands of fliers in the weeks after his death and the billboards are another way to reach possible witnesses.

“This is an effort to show we still want and need information and to let the public know we’re not going anywhere,” said Yulanda Burns, a United States Postal Inspector and Public Information Officer.

Poster billboards in Tallapoosa County and digital billboards in Opelika and Montgomery will publicize information about the USPS reward and information hotlines

The USPS is offering up to $100,000 in reward money for information about the crime. The reward is also eligible for information about anyone who was an accessory to the crime, for conspiracy to commit the crime and for receiving or having unlawful possession of any property secured during the crime.

The USPS would like anyone who witnessed suspicious activity in the Camp Hill area in the days before or after the murder to call one of the information hotlines. The Postal Inspection Service has set up a command center at the Opelika post office and officers from across the Southeast have joined the team there.

“We’re still full force in our investigation,” Burns said. “We’re still in the process of contacting possible witnesses and getting information about the case.”

If you have information about the crime, call any of the following hotlines: U.S. Postal Inspection Service hotline, 877-876-2455; Tallapoosa County Sheriff’s Department, 256-825-4264; or the Tallapoosa County Sheriff’s Department Secret Witness Number, 256-827-2035.
