HBHS closes sesaon with sweep
Published Wednesday, February 3, 2010
Both Horseshoe Bend basketball teams will enter the postseason on a good note, as each defeated Wadley to end the regular season.
The Lady Generals were 44-32 winners over the Lady Bulldogs and finished the year at 24-5 overall.
Carlie Vickers scored 11 points to lead the way for HBHS. Ranley Clayton had eight points, and Jessica Williams and Rachel Smothers tossed in six apiece in their team’s third straight win.
The General boys got their fourth win of the year in a 47-46 decision over Wadley. HBHS led by eight in the fourth quarter and withstood a Bulldog run in the end.
Jay Glenn, who had 13 points, and Kendall Thomas, who had 10, were the top two HBHS scorers. Corey Battle and Josh Martin chipped in with eight points each.
Each team enters the area tournament with opposite outlooks. The girls face a Clay County team they’ve whipped three times, while the boys take on Lanett, a team they’ve had little luck against.
“On the boys’ side, we just need to divide the game up into four parts and try to have a chance in the last quarter,” head coach Mike Boyd said. “We feel like we can win.
“The girls are the opposite,” Boyd said. “Clay County feels like they can win and we need to take care of business. We’ll have a full group at full strength and we need to play well before we get another shot at Lanett.”
