Library friends group kicks off membership drive

Published Wednesday, February 3, 2010

Valentine’s Day is coming up, so take notice all you husbands. Many of our local businesses will be open both Saturdays preceding 2/14, so please shop with one or more of them. Keep our money within this area! Walmart doesn’t need any more of your dollars, especially for Valentine’s Day. I’ve received dozens of emails from our vendors listing their goodies, so go downtown and see for yourselves.

Last Tuesday afternoon I stopped by the TPI office in Alex City to say hello to the staff and enjoyed the visit. Got to finally meet Kenneth and Mary L. Boone, owners, and reintroduced myself to several others. Of course busy Dale Liesch was on a business call, but I had a quick visit with several others and it was about time I visited TPI. Since I started writing this column, Lea Ann Stewart has been my best contact and always gives me the help I need. We’re all lucky to have TPI in our midst.

February is the month for the “Friends of the Library” membership drive. They’re collecting dues of $10 for individuals, $15 for families, and $25 for business memberships for 2010. Please support this group as they endeavor to keep and expand library services in these times of tight budgets. Their funds are used for supplying special programs, buying materials, etc. They also hold book sales, sponsor book signings and plan other special events to create interest in library use. Please stop by or call the library at 825-7820 for a membership form, or download a form from our Web site at www.dadevillepubliclibrary.com. Remember, your donations are tax deductible.

I enjoyed being with the Presbyterians last Sunday morning, especially since one of my very favorite ministers (the Rev. Monty Cook) was at the pulpit with a lovely sermon entitled “Child of the Covenant”. The choir was small but sounded great with “I’m a Child of the King” as their anthem. Not only is Dale Brasell an excellent director, but his wife Dawn plays the piano with skill and heart. In fact, the piece she played during the Offering was breathtaking and I wanted to clap and stomp my feet, but didn’t. The highlight of the service was the Rev. Monty’s Baptism Ceremony for beautiful baby girl Vivian Mae Jones. The baby’s parents held her during the Baptism, and she never whimpered or frowned, just beamed at all of us, especially the preacher. This ceremony was touching and we all loved being a part of it. Grandparents and several family relatives and friends were in the congregation with big smiles. At the end of the service we had a brief meeting and elected three new Elders, Hugo Heflin, Jim Martin and Ed Norrell, introduced by Elder Martha Hall. Welcome to you all.

DHS News:

We’re proud to say that Ashley Thomas competed in an important contest recently and became one of the top ten finalists! “Future Black Leaders Essay Contest” sponsored by McDonald's Corporation in Montgomery. She will be honored at the Shakespeare Festival, Montgomery, on February 12. Hooray for Ashley.

Most Important: Parents of 8th graders: plan to come to the DHS auditorium to attend one of the upcoming orientation sessions. The sessions will be on Tuesday, Feb. 23 at 9 a.m. or 6 p.m., and also on Thursday Feb. 25 at 6 p.m.

Congratulations to the DHS Junior Scholars Bowl Team for winning first place in the Scholars Bowl last Saturday. On March 6, this team will compete at the state level at Hoover High School. First place is wonderful for these 8th graders, let’s hope they hold onto that title at state.

Congratulations to the junior high boys basketball Team for winning the East Alabama Basketball Tournament last week.

On Feb. 17 at 1 p.m. in the DHS auditorium there will be a special event, open to the public, entitled “Multi-Cultural Program”. Come one, come all.

DHS Tennis games begin on Feb. 16. I don’t have a schedule yet, but will share it with you next week. In the meantime, drive by the school, park in the parking lot, and walk to the tennis courts to admire the Kiwanis Club’s recent donation of new bleachers. We are VERY proud of them.

CMS News:

The CMS team also competed in the Jr. Scholars Bowl last Saturday, a half dozen seventh graders who worked hard, had a good time, and look forward to the next bowl.

DES News:

Until Feb. 10, DES will be selling cookie dough all over town. Please buy some if you can, as I’m told the cookies are delicious and, like all our schools in the U.S., they need the money!

News from BRHS in Alex City:

Congratulations to Amy Marie Traylor, a senior at BRHS. She was the winner of the DAR “Good Citizen Award” in November, competing against several seniors from other schools. She won because of the quality of the essay submitted for the competition. We have just heard from ASDAR that Amy also was selected as the STATE winner, so now her essay will go to National to compete with winners from other states. Amy’s proud parents are Marc and Elaine Traylor, and all of Dadeville and the DAR are impressed with and proud of this young lady. Good job, Amy!

News from the Wellness Center: The Commitment to Fitness Race is in full swing. I’ve told you about each month’s winners: Barry Ingram for October, Allen Treadwell for November, Dannie Corley for December, and January’s winner is Rev. Tom Pemberton with 29 visits to the center. Congratulations to all of you. You’re in line for (maybe) winning the $150 Grand Prize. Let’s see who the winners are for the months of February and March. I’m impressed with all of you for your physical fitness efforts. I only do water aerobics three times a week, but that’s what I look forward to. Ron Murray is a wonderful instructor and keeps us old bats hopping.

The B.B. Comer Memorial Library in Sylacauga’s “Brown Bag Lecture Series” (Jan. 6th to March 10th) is drawing good crowds every Wednesday. The Lecture on February 10 will be given by Mr. Wayne Flynt and it is titled “Storytelling: Alabama Style”. Mr. Flynt is a very clever storyteller with a big following all over the state. You may arrive at the library at 11:00 a.m. with your own “brown bag lunch” or enjoy the refreshments supplied by the library. There is no charge for these events and I guarantee it is time well spent. For more information, call 256-249-0961.

As you know, the #1 Fundraiser in town, Peggy Bullard, is always selling something to help Kiwanis, the Chamber, all our schools, churches and other organizations. She currently has the following items for sale at Lil Lambs & Ivy, telephone 825-9415:

Girl Scout Cookies. She sold 1,000 boxes (yes, that’s one thousand) last year.

Chicken dinner tickets for the DHS Girls Softball Team @ $7 each. These are delicious dinners, believe me, one-half chicken cooked perfectly with potato, etc. Pickup your boxes to go or eat at the Rec Center on February 6th (Saturday) anytime between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Last but not least, Miss Peggy is selling tickets at $5 each for the Kiwanis Pancake Breakfast, set for Saturday, February 20, from 7 – 11 a.m. in the school cafeteria. Kids under six years eat free, and you can eat as much as you want, hear country music, grab a balloon for your kids, and maybe get your picture in the paper! What more could you ask for?

Ask the Good Lord to give us patience with one another.

Thought for Today: If you could sell your experience for what it cost, you would never need Social Security.

Stay healthy, happy and warm. See y’all next week!
