County gets green to go green

Published Wednesday, February 10, 2010

The Tallapoosa County Courthouse just received some green in order to help it go green.

The courthouse recently received a grant totaling $103,949 through the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs to help fund energy-efficient upgrades at the nearly 50-year-old courthouse.

“Making energy-saving improvements to public facilities saves money and benefits taxpayers,” Gov. Bob Riley said. “Such projects can give an immediate economic boost to the community and are an investment that pays dividends for many years to come.”

ADECA is administering the grants from funds made available to the state as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, county administrator Blake Beck told the Tallapoosa County Commission at its monthly meeting Monday.

“I didn’t think we had a good shot at this because there wasn’t a lot of money and there were a lot of applicants, but we had a better shot than I thought,” Beck said. “I’m very pleased we were able to get this. There are improvements we can make because of it.”

The total is less than the county asked for, according to Beck, but the money should help with the purchase and installation of new heating and air conditioning systems and lighting upgrades. The money could also be used to work on windows in the courthouse.

“We didn’t get the full amount we asked for so we have to see haw far it goes,” Beck said.

The new heat pumps and upgraded lighting systems will reduce annual energy consumption by more than $19,000, according to an ADECA press release.

In other business, the commission approved a bid to lease three new patrol cars for the Tallapoosa County Sheriff’s Department. The county also approved to post 15-ton weight limit signs on Moose Road, Walker Ferry Road, Paul Austin Road, Newman Road and Golden Pond Road. The commission also appointed Steve East to the Wall Street Water Authority Board.
