Museum asks for commission help
Published Wednesday, February 10, 2010
Members of the Tallapoose Historical Society asked the Tallapoosa County Commission for help in purchasing an adjacent building to expand the organization’s museum in Dadeville.
Dr. Charles Farrow, president of the Tallapoose Historical Society, led a contingent to convince the commission to support them in their efforts to expand.
“Tallapoosa County is a treasure because we have the museum,” Farrow said after Monday’s commission meeting.
Farrow said the society plans to purchase the building on Feb. 16 with the help of $40,000 in grants from the Alabama Historical Commission and the Chattahoochee Historical Commission, but the society still needs $35,000 for the purchase.
“We’ve run out of space and we didn’t want to lose that building,” Farrow said. “We had to make a decision.”
Farrow added that the society would also accept donations from citizens all over the county to help.
The museum in downtown is open on Thursdays and Fridays form 9 a.m. to noon. It is also open on the first Saturday of each month from 10 a.m. to noon. Farrow said he would like to open it everyday, but that would require addition volunteers.
Farrow said the museum attracted more than 400 people last year by their count.
