When the FLW’s Bass Fishing League moved its tournament on Lake Martin back to Sunday, Larry Barron came close to not showing up.
“I was about to tell them to return my entry fee and not show up, but I’m glad I did,” Barron said.
Barron only caught three fish, but it was good enough to finish second place in the tournament. It was the second time he finished second in a BFL tournament. He also received a paycheck of $1,859.
During the tournament, Barron fished on the Blue Creek side of the lake and it paid off as he collected 11 pounds, 1 ounce. He also used a crankbait to catch all of his bass.
“I got my last one around nine o’clock,” Barron said. “I had one other one come off my line, but I didn’t even get a bite after that. It was a tough day for fishing.”
Barron hasn’t made up his mind if he’s going to continue to fish the rest of the Bama Series.
“They’ve changed up the rest of the circuit,” Barron said. “The closest lake is at Logan Martin. The rest are in north Alabama.”
Valley angler L.J. McCullough beat out Barron for first place with 13 pounds, 10 ounces including a 5-pound, 12-ounce largemouth that tied for Big Bass. Tim Williams of Opelika was third with 10 pounds, 11 ounces.
In the co-angler division, Tarry Knowles of Samson took home first place with 8 pounds, 7 ounces with three fish. He won the division by 1 pound, 5 ounces over Cameron Isbell of Ashville. Kevin Edwards of Decatur was third with 6 pounds, 11 ounces. Dadeville co-angler Jimmy Jones finished fourth with 6 pounds, 7 ounces.
The tournament was supposed to be held Saturday, but snow and icy roads forced tournament officials to move the event until Sunday. Temperatures began the day below freezing but warmed into the 50s by lunchtime.
However, it didn’t make much of a difference. Only five anglers and one co-angler caught the limit of five fish.
“I knew coming into the event that it was going to be tough,” Barron said. “It turned out to be a pretty good day.”
