Lady Tiger softball team beats Smiths
Published Wednesday, February 17, 2010
The Dadeville softball team broke open a close game with two runs in the fifth inning and two in the sixth to defeat Smiths Station on the road 6-1 on Tuesday.
Reba Hawkins went 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI, and Kim Greer was 2-for-4 with two runs batted in for the Lady Tigers (1-0).
“A couple of players stood out, but as a whole, I thought everyone did their job and played well,” head coach Kasey Smith said. “I told the girls in the top of the fifth that we didn’t need to be satisfied with a 2-1 lead.
“They responded with a couple of big hits and that was good to see.”
Jode Caldwell pitched three scoreless innings, allowing three hits, a walk and a hit batter, to get the win. Rae Williams, who had a two-run, bases loaded hit, tossed the last four innings and struck out two batters.
“For having just thrown live one time before the game, I thought the pitchers did great,” Smith said. “It’s not easy to pitch in the cold weather with little work.”
Shae Heard and Janie Moran both had one hit and one run. Senior Kristen Sharpe singled and walked three times.
The Lady Tigers, Benjamin Russell and Opelika will be in action at DHS Saturday. Action starts at 9 a.m. when DHS plays Opelika.
The short-handed Dadeville baseball team was swept by Tallassee 16-4 and 14-2 in its opening series.
