Lady Tigers complete busy week
Published Wednesday, February 24, 2010
After a 2-2 performance at the Dadeville Round Robin, the DHS softball team pushed back over the .500 mark with an 11-1 win on the road at Central-Coosa on Monday.
The Lady Tigers got three hits from Andrea White, two from Shae Heard and Devin Hooks and a strong pitching performance from Rae Williams to improve to 4-3 on the season and drop the Lady Cougars to 1-1.
“I have no complaints of our ball club on Monday,” head coach Kasey Smith said. “They threw (Katie Smith), who is a great pitcher. She started the game by going high on us a lot. We recognized that early, the hitters made adjusments and we started getting base hits.”
Reba Hawkins reached second base on an error to start the game, stole third and scored on a passed ball. Smith said that set the tone early. Hawkins finished the game with a hit, two stolen bases, two runs and an RBI.
Kim Greer had a double in the win, and Janie Moran went 1-for-3 with two runs. Smith was happy with their defensive efforts in the game.
“Janie caught her first game this season to get prepared for tournament play and did a really good job,” Smith said. “Rae pitched and looked good. She got a lot of ground balls in the infield and we made plays on all of them. Kim made several great plays at third base. We only had one defensive error.”
The Lady Tigers split four games at their own round robin on Saturday. Dadeville picked up two one-run wins over Opelika, 4-3 and 6-5, and lost two one-run affairs with Benjamin Russell, 5-4 and 7-6.
The Lady Wildcats won the first game over DHS after two runners were walked in with the bases loaded in the fifth inning. In the championship game, BRHS freshman Tatum Gandy hit a two-run walk-off homer to complete a four-run comeback.
“We played good ball this past weekend, but could not get everything we wanted going to finish both Benjamin Russell games. For our first tournament, we did a good job on the field and at the plate.
“Several players made some adjustments at the plate, and things are coming around for them. We had some big plays from our outfielders, and I feel like, with some work on the little things, our defense will be fine.”
Smith also complimented the work of Jodie Caldwell in the circle and catcher Andrea White behind the plate.
Dadeville’s other loss came to Handley by a 4-3 score last Thursday.
The Lady Tigers will take part in the CACC Classic hosted by BRHS on Friday and Saturday. DHS opens up with Handley at 7 p.m. Friday. The winner of that game will play the winner between Lee and Wetumpka at 8:30 p.m.
