County candidates prepare for 2010 election cycle

Published Wednesday, March 3, 2010

The 2010 general election will not take place until November, but candidate qualifying for the event is underway now.

Tallapoosa County Probate Judge Gloria Sinclair said candidate qualifying for those running on a Democratic ticket began Feb. 16, while candidate qualifying for Republicans began Tuesday.

“The county offices up for election this year are all five district seats in the County Commission, sheriff, coroner and members three and four of the Tallapoosa County Board of Education,” Sinclair said.

As of Tuesday afternoon, Sinclair said three individuals have qualified for county offices in the election.

She said Tallapoosa County Sheriff Jimmy Abbett has qualified for re-election, District 4 County Commissioner Emma Jean Thweatt has qualified for re-election and Dylan Oliver has qualified to run for District 3 in the County Commission.

Sinclair said individuals must take various steps to declare their candidacy, including paying a fee to their party, filling out an ethics form and filing with both the probate office and state.

The primary for the election will take place June 1, the runoff on July 13 and the general election will take place Nov. 2.

Sinclair said the deadline for qualifying is April 2 at 5 p.m.
