Students help Red Cross
Published Wednesday, March 10, 2010
Local Red Cross director Melissa Poe knew exactly how much money was raised by Councill Middle School to help Haiti.
“One-thousand thirty-four dollars and two cents,” She said with a smile. “It was fantastic. I don’t want to leave a penny off.”
Poe made these remarks while at Councill to present a plaque for the school to Julie Mask’s homeroom class, who raised the most money during the penny drive.
Mask said her students were very motivated by the fact that the earthquake in Haiti occurred while children were at school.
“They brought it in by the bagful,” Mask said. “We had a bucket in the classroom and we filled it up.”
The students will also benefit from a school-wide prize of a popsicle party.
The money raised in the school-wide effort will go to support the International Response Fund, Poe said. The fund will help the country rebuild after the earthquake.
“It’s going to be such a long road and the Red Cross will be (in Haiti) for a long time,” Poe said. “It’s such a poor country, they are estimating it will be years.”
