Wednesday, July 14, 2010
Lots of birthdays coming up in July. On the 17th, three teenage girls will celebrate their birthdays: my lovely granddaughter, Lauren Peters, turns 19. The Smith twins, Melissa and Mallory, will have their 18th birthday. July 17 is also the birthday of Lydia Staples. On July 19, friend Gayle Sewell has a birthday, and on the 21st, B.J. Taylor and Rusty Marcell will celebrate. My husband Bob has a birthday on July 26, with Superintendent Philip Baker’s on July 27. Happy birthday to you all. I’m sure I missed some July birthdays and if so, sorry. Read story

Big mistake in my column last week: In the section about Jessica Hetherington and her presentation before the Dadeville Kiwanians, I said she was a graduate of “DHS and AU”! Considering the amount of competition between the two universities, I must be more careful. Read story
Annual Kiwanis Club golf tournament was a huge success
Thursday, June 17, 2010
The Kiwanis golf tournament at Lakewinds last Monday was a huge success. Not only did everyone have fun, before, during and after the thunderstorm, but we netted almost $6,000. As you know, Kiwanis dollars are used to either help our youth, our schools or our community. All 34 Kiwanis members thank the participants very much. We had lots of local support. Special thanks go to the co-chairs of the golf tournament, Peggy Bullard and Lavaughn Johnson. Incidentally, we had 39 male golfers and one female playing in the tournament, Ms. Grace Talton. Hooray for you, Grace. Your team was a winner. Read story

Congratulations to our students who are out of school until Aug. 6. That’s nine weeks for fun, travel, earning money, summer school or whatever activities occur during this break. We will miss seeing our DHS Key Clubbers at Kiwanis each week, but they have promised to stop in on some Thursdays whenever possible. Read story

Commission should go further
Good news indeed that the Tallapoosa County Commission is beginning to get control of its large debt. The commissioners are justifiably proud of the “Sejin story” and the much-needed jobs the plant brought to the area. Kudos to the Commission. Read story
